Fans of Korean and Japanese romantic dramas have a new title to look forward to this fall. Merry Berry Love, the upcoming cross-border romantic comedy starring Ji Chang-wook and Japanese actress Mio Imada, has officially set its worldwide premiere for October 7 on Disney+.
The series brings together Korean and Japanese talent for a story about two people from completely different worlds who unexpectedly find themselves drawn to each other. It also marks Ji Chang-wook’s return to the romantic-comedy genre after several years.
Ji Chang-wook Returns to Romantic Comedy
Ji Chang-wook stars as Lee Yu-bin, a Korean space planner whose carefully built career and lifestyle suddenly fall apart. Looking for a fresh start, he leaves his familiar surroundings and travels to a remote Japanese island.
The role gives the actor an opportunity to return to the lighter romantic-comedy style that has been an important part of his career. He previously appeared in popular romance projects including Suspicious Partner and Welcome to Samdal-ri.
This time, however, his character’s polished professional life is replaced by the very different reality of working on a strawberry farm.
Mio Imada Plays a Dedicated Strawberry Farmer
Mio Imada plays Shirahama Karin, a young Japanese farmer who has devoted herself to growing strawberries on the island.
Karin’s life is closely connected to her farm, making her very different from Yu-bin when they first meet. Their initial encounter is reportedly far from smooth, setting up the humorous and unexpected circumstances that eventually bring them closer.
As Yu-bin adjusts to island life, the relationship between the two gradually develops into something deeper.
A Romance Set on a Japanese Island
The picturesque island setting plays an important role in Merry Berry Love. Instead of the busy urban environments commonly featured in modern Korean romantic dramas, the series moves its story to a quieter rural community surrounded by farmland and natural scenery.
Karin’s strawberry fields become one of the central locations for the developing romance. The contrast between Yu-bin’s previous city lifestyle and Karin’s agricultural life is expected to provide both comedy and emotional conflict.
The story ultimately focuses on how two people with very different backgrounds help each other heal, change and grow.
