Dolly Parton Recalls ‘Steel Magnolias’ Director Telling Her She Couldn’t Act

Country music legend Dolly Parton once shared a candid memory from the set of the 1989 classic film Steel Magnolias, revealing how the late director Herbert Ross bluntly told her that she “couldn’t act.”
In the film, Parton played Truvy Jones, a sharp-witted salon owner in Louisiana alongside an iconic ensemble cast featuring Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis.

Dolly Parton’s Iconic Comeback to Herbert Ross

Herbert Ross was known for his demanding and harsh directing style on set. When he directly criticized Parton’s acting skills and suggested she take acting lessons, the “Jolene” singer didn’t back down.

Instead, Parton put the director in his place with a legendary response:
“I’m not an actress, I’m Dolly Parton. I’m a personality who has been hired to do this movie.

You’re the director, so it’s your job to make me look like I’m acting.”

Parton noted that she was hired because producers knew her name and star power would bring people to theaters, leaving the heavy lifting of directing up to Ross.

A Tense Movie Set That Built Lifelong Bonds

Dolly Parton wasn’t the only star who faced criticism from Ross. The director was notoriously hard on the entire cast, particularly a young Julia Roberts, who was taking on one of her first major Hollywood roles.

Co-stars Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine later recalled how Ross’s strict demeanor actually bonded the women together. Field noted that the veteran actresses frequently stepped in to defend Roberts and stand up to Ross during difficult days on set.

Despite the initial friction during filming, Parton shared that everyone eventually made peace before production wrapped, turning Steel Magnolias into one of cinema’s most beloved stories of female friendship.
