Amazon is preparing to significantly expand its drone delivery network, with plans to bring its Prime Air service to nearly 500 cities and towns across the United States by the end of 2026.
The expansion could make drone delivery available to millions more customers, particularly in suburban communities where lightweight packages can be transported directly from local delivery facilities to homes. Amazon says eligible orders could arrive in as little as 30 minutes.
Prime Air Targets Nearly 500 Locations
Amazon’s Prime Air program currently operates in a limited number of U.S. locations. The company now plans to expand the service dramatically, increasing its reach to approximately 500 U.S. locations before the end of the year.
The move represents a major step in Amazon’s effort to make drone delivery a more practical part of its logistics network. New markets include areas around Syracuse, New York, and Cleveland, Ohio, among other locations.
Deliveries Designed for Lightweight Packages
The drone service is designed primarily for smaller packages weighing up to five pounds.
Customers could receive eligible products within around 30 minutes, providing an alternative to traditional delivery methods for items that do not require a larger vehicle.
Amazon’s latest MK30 drone can autonomously transport packages from a delivery facility and release them while hovering close to the customer’s property.
Drone Hubs Will Serve Local Communities
Each Prime Air delivery hub can serve customers within a radius of approximately 7.5 miles.
This approach allows Amazon to position drone facilities close to residential communities while keeping flight distances relatively short. The company is focusing heavily on suburban areas where drones can potentially reduce delivery times for smaller orders.
Amazon Faces Regulatory and Community Challenges
Expanding drone delivery across hundreds of locations will require cooperation with local authorities and regulatory approvals.
