AI for Mental Health Support: Risks You Should Know

September 7, 2026

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly common source of emotional and mental health support. People are turning to AI chatbots to discuss stress, anxiety, relationships, loneliness and other personal concerns because the technology is available instantly and can feel easier to approach than traditional therapy.

However, experts warn that AI for mental health support comes with important limitations. While chatbots may help users organize their thoughts or find questions to discuss with a professional, they should not be considered a replacement for qualified mental health care.

Why People Turn to AI for Mental Health Support

One of the biggest attractions of AI chatbots is accessibility. Users can start a conversation at almost any time without making an appointment or worrying about being judged.

The American Psychological Association’s 2026 survey found that 77% of psychologists had spoken with patients who had used AI for support or other reasons. About 35% said their patients were using AI as an additional mental health professional.

For some people, AI can therefore feel like a convenient first step when they want to express difficult thoughts or explore a problem.

AI Can Give Incorrect or Misleading Advice

One of the biggest concerns is accuracy. AI systems can produce responses that sound confident and supportive while still being incorrect or missing important context.

Mental health situations can be particularly complicated because the same symptoms may have very different causes. A chatbot may not have the clinical judgment needed to understand a person’s complete history, recognize subtle warning signs or determine whether professional intervention is necessary.

The APA says AI should not be relied upon to diagnose mental or medical conditions, and information generated by AI should be verified with a health care professional.

Risk of Emotional Dependence

Another concern is becoming overly dependent on an AI chatbot for companionship or emotional reassurance.

Because AI can respond immediately and consistently, users may gradually choose conversations with a chatbot instead of maintaining important relationships with friends, family members or professionals. The World Economic Forum has highlighted over-reliance and isolation as potential concerns surrounding mental health chatbots.

The APA survey also found that 93% of psychologists believed using AI for companionship could negatively affect users’ social engagement.

Privacy Is Another Major Concern

People often share highly personal information with AI systems, including relationship problems, emotional struggles and sensitive health details. This creates questions about how that information is stored, processed and potentially shared.

Public health experts have also raised concerns about privacy, safety and the lack of consistent regulatory standards for consumer AI mental health tools.

AI Should Support—Not Replace—Human Care

AI for mental health support may have useful applications when used carefully. It can help someone organize thoughts, prepare questions for a therapy appointment or find general information.

But serious mental health concerns require human judgment and appropriate professional care. AI can misunderstand situations, provide inaccurate information or fail to recognize a crisis.

For anyone experiencing severe emotional distress or thoughts of self-harm, relying solely on an AI chatbot is not appropriate. Reaching out to a qualified mental health professional, trusted person or emergency/crisis service is a safer option.

As AI continues to develop, better safeguards, privacy protections and clinical research will be essential before these technologies can play a larger role in mental health care.
