Men’s Jumpsuit Fashion: Why Stephen Libby Wants to Bring It Back

September 7, 2026
Stephen-Libby

Jumpsuits have never been the easiest piece of clothing for men to embrace, but Stephen Libby is determined to change that. Since appearing on The Traitors, Libby has become closely associated with the one-piece outfit, turning what was once an unusual fashion choice into his personal style signature.

For Libby, men’s jumpsuit fashion is not simply about making a statement. He believes jumpsuits are practical, stylish and surprisingly easy to wear, especially when compared with putting together a complete outfit from separate pieces.

Stephen Libby Became Known for Jumpsuits

Libby admits that jumpsuits were not initially guaranteed to become part of his The Traitors wardrobe. He packed a couple for the show, but the reaction from viewers was mixed. While many people loved his look, others questioned the unusual outfits, creating plenty of memes online.

Ironically, that attention helped turn Libby into “Stephen from Traitors in the jumpsuits.”

He now owns five jumpsuits, most of which have a distinctly 1970s influence. That era remains particularly important to him because jumpsuits were once a major part of men’s popular fashion.

The 1970s Influence Is Still Strong

The 1970s were a golden period for the men’s jumpsuit. Style icons such as David Bowie and Elton John helped establish the garment as a bold and fashionable alternative to traditional menswear.

Although jumpsuits later disappeared from mainstream men’s wardrobes, Libby believes they deserve another chance.

Modern stars including Harry Styles and Benson Boone have also helped demonstrate that men’s fashion can move beyond conventional shirts, trousers and suits. For Libby, the current interest in retro-inspired clothing creates an ideal opportunity for the jumpsuit to return.

Why Libby Loves the Jumpsuit

The biggest attraction is practicality.

A jumpsuit effectively provides an entire outfit in one piece, making getting dressed much simpler. Libby says this is particularly useful because he already takes time deciding what to wear.

There is also a surprisingly practical advantage when using the bathroom. Unlike traditional trousers, a jumpsuit does not require dealing with a button or belt before getting ready.

But convenience does not mean sacrificing style. Libby believes a well-fitted jumpsuit can create a longer, more streamlined silhouette.

How to Wear a Men’s Jumpsuit

According to Libby, the most important detail is getting the waist position right. The waist should sit roughly where the wearer would normally have the waist of their trousers. Alterations can help create a more flattering fit.

Because the jumpsuit is already the central feature of the outfit, accessories should remain relatively simple. Libby prefers loafers or Cuban-heeled shoes and believes trainers can make the look feel too casual.

The right footwear can therefore transform the jumpsuit from a novelty piece into a sophisticated fashion statement.

Finding Affordable Jumpsuits for Men

One challenge for anyone interested in men’s jumpsuit fashion is finding affordable options. Libby says the market often offers men overalls and boilersuits rather than fashion-focused jumpsuits.

His solution is unconventional but practical: consider buying a women’s jumpsuit and having it altered for the right fit.

Vintage stores are another option, particularly for anyone looking for authentic 1970s styles. Libby remains fascinated by vintage pieces and is even searching for a purple 1970s disco jumpsuit inspired by an iconic David Bowie look.

Could Jumpsuits Become Mainstream Again?

Fashion constantly brings forgotten trends back into the spotlight, and the jumpsuit may be ready for another revival.
