George Clooney used his appearance at the 2026 Venice Film Festival to reflect on the changing Hollywood landscape, the growing importance of film festivals and his own decision to step away from directing for the time being.
The actor and filmmaker, who is being honored with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, spoke candidly about why major studios appear less dependent on festivals than they once were and why his own priorities have shifted toward acting.
Hollywood Studios Are Changing Their Relationship With Festivals
One of Clooney’s key observations concerned the reduced presence of major American studios at this year’s Venice festival.
According to Clooney, Hollywood studios increasingly make movies that do not necessarily need a major film festival as a launchpad. Large-scale franchise films and established intellectual properties already have significant marketing power and built-in audiences, meaning they can reach viewers without relying on the prestige and publicity traditionally associated with festivals.
For Clooney, this does not mean festivals are becoming irrelevant. Instead, it highlights how their role may be changing within the modern film industry.
Venice Still Matters for Filmmakers
Despite his comments about studios, Clooney continues to see major value in film festivals.
Venice provides filmmakers with an international platform where movies can receive critical attention, connect with audiences and generate conversations that extend beyond traditional studio marketing.
The 83rd Venice Film Festival is also showcasing a broad selection of international cinema at a time when Hollywood’s studio presence is comparatively limited. The festival runs from August 31 through September 12, 2026, and remains one of the industry’s most important stops during awards season.
Why George Clooney Is Stepping Back From Directing
Clooney also addressed his own future behind the camera.
Although directing has been an important part of his career, he explained that the demands of directing make it difficult to spend enough time with his family. A film can require months of preparation and production, often involving long periods away from home.
At this stage of his life, Clooney said he would rather focus on acting, which allows him to maintain greater flexibility while spending more time with his wife, Amal Clooney, and their children.
His most recent feature as a director was The Boys in the Boat, released in 2023.
Acting Has Become the Priority
Clooney’s decision does not appear to be a rejection of filmmaking. Instead, it represents a change in priorities.
Directing requires taking responsibility for nearly every aspect of a production, from preparing the project and managing a large crew to overseeing months of filming and post-production. Acting, by comparison, can offer a more focused role.
Clooney has continued to take on major acting projects and is expected to return as Danny Ocean in the upcoming Ocean’s 14, with production expected to begin later in 2026.
