New research is offering a clearer picture of the eating disorders genetic risk behind conditions such as anorexia nervosa and binge eating. The findings challenge the idea that eating disorders are primarily linked to body weight or personal choices, showing that genetics may play an important role in how these conditions develop.
Published in Nature Mental Health on August 19, 2026, the study represents one of the largest genetic investigations of anorexia nervosa and one of the first major studies to directly examine genetic factors associated with binge-eating behavior.
Genetics May Influence Eating Disorders
Researchers analyzed genetic information from more than 39,000 people with binge-eating behavior and more than 24,000 people with anorexia nervosa. These groups were compared with more than 1.2 million controls. The datasets primarily involved people of European ancestry, an important limitation when considering how broadly the results can be applied.
The researchers identified six genetic regions, known as loci, associated with binge-eating behavior. For anorexia nervosa, the analysis confirmed six previously identified loci and identified two additional ones, bringing the total to eight.
These findings provide additional evidence that eating disorders have a biological component rather than being simply the result of lifestyle decisions.
Binge Eating and Anorexia Are Not Genetically Identical
Although binge eating and anorexia nervosa share some genetic characteristics, the study found important differences between them.
Binge-eating behavior showed genetic relationships with impulsivity and higher body mass, while anorexia nervosa displayed different relationships with metabolic characteristics. The researchers also found that much of the genetic influence associated with both conditions was not explained by body mass index.
This distinction is important because eating disorders can affect people across a wide range of body sizes.
Eating Disorders Are More Than Body Weight
The findings reinforce the idea that eating disorders cannot be understood simply by looking at someone’s weight.
Researchers at King’s College London noted that genetic factors associated with eating disorders are different from many of the genetic factors associated with body weight itself. This may help researchers better understand why people with very different body types can develop eating disorders.
The study also found genetic connections between binge eating, anorexia and several psychiatric traits, suggesting that some biological pathways may overlap across different mental health conditions.
Family History May Matter, But It Does Not Determine Your Future
Having relatives with an eating disorder may indicate increased vulnerability, but genetics do not determine whether someone will develop a disorder.
Experts emphasize that eating disorders are influenced by multiple factors, including biological, psychological, behavioral and social influences. A genetic predisposition should therefore not be interpreted as a diagnosis.
