For years, GitHub has been the default home for software developers and engineering teams. But the rise of AI-powered coding is beginning to challenge that position. Cursor, the AI coding platform now owned by SpaceX, has launched Origin, a code-hosting platform designed to bring more of the software development process under one roof.
Cursor Wants to Go Beyond AI Coding
Cursor initially became known for helping developers write and modify software with AI. Its strategy is now expanding beyond the editor.
With Origin, Cursor is entering the code-hosting market traditionally dominated by GitHub. The platform is designed to connect coding, code management, testing and deployment into a more integrated workflow.
That approach reflects a broader shift in software development: AI agents are increasingly capable of writing, reviewing and modifying code with limited human intervention.
GitHub’s Massive Advantage
GitHub remains an enormous platform. According to the Forbes analysis, it has more than 180 million developers and over 630 million repositories, while more than 90% of Fortune 100 companies use the service.
That installed base gives Microsoft a significant advantage. Companies have spent years building repositories, workflows, integrations and internal processes around GitHub.
Replacing such infrastructure is therefore much harder than simply launching a competing product.
A Major GitHub Outage Added to the Conversation
The timing of Origin’s beta launch attracted additional attention because GitHub experienced a significant service disruption around the same time.
Forbes reported that the outage lasted six hours and 42 minutes, with elevated error rates affecting pull requests, issues and APIs. The disruption was not caused by Cursor, but it gave the new competitor an unexpected demonstration of why companies may want greater resilience and alternatives within their development infrastructure.
For enterprise technology leaders, the incident raises a familiar question: how dependent should a business become on a single platform?
AI Agents Are Changing the Development Pipeline
The bigger story may be less about GitHub versus Origin and more about how software itself is being created.
At Cursor, approximately 35% of merged pull requests are reportedly now written by autonomous agents. If that trend continues, traditional developer platforms may need to adapt to workflows where software agents generate changes at a much faster rate than human developers.
Cursor’s strategy is effectively to control more of that pipeline—from the environment where code is created to where it is stored, reviewed and eventually deployed.
The company has also integrated Origin with services including Vercel, Depot and Buildkite, strengthening its ambition to connect multiple stages of software development.
