Dolly Parton’s Creative Director Reveals How He Protected Her Iconic Style and Integrity

September 6, 2026

Dolly Parton’s unmistakable image was more than a collection of glamorous outfits—it was the result of years of careful creative work. Steve Summers, Parton’s longtime creative director, previously opened up about their professional relationship and how he helped maintain the country music legend’s signature style while staying true to who she was.

Steve Summers’ Journey With Dolly Parton

Summers first met Parton while working at Dollywood. He initially joined the theme park as a singer and performer and eventually became one of Parton’s onstage dance partners.

His interest in costume design grew after he began improving his own performance outfits. That experience eventually led him into wardrobe and creative work, setting the stage for a much larger role in Parton’s career.

By 2006, Summers had moved to Nashville to work with Parton full-time as her creative director.

Protecting Dolly Parton’s Signature Image

One of Summers’ biggest responsibilities was helping preserve the visual identity that had become synonymous with Dolly Parton.

From fabrics and colors to fit and functionality, he paid close attention to even the smallest details. The goal was not simply to create glamorous clothing but to ensure every look remained authentic to Parton’s personality and recognizable style.

Summers understood that Parton’s fashion was an important part of her public identity, so maintaining her individuality was central to the creative process.

Creating Custom Looks for a Global Icon

Parton’s stage wardrobe required an extraordinary level of customization. Summers and his team worked on numerous outfits designed specifically around her proportions, performances and personal preferences.

Rather than relying on standard mannequins, Summers used specially designed forms to better understand how garments would look and function for Parton.

This attention to detail helped create outfits that combined glamour with the practicality required for performances and public appearances.

Dolly Parton Supported His Education

Parton also played an important role in Summers’ professional development.

Recognizing his creative potential, she helped fund his education at the Fashion Institute of Technology. The opportunity allowed Summers to strengthen his knowledge of fashion and design while continuing to develop the creative skills he would later use in his work with Parton.

Their partnership therefore extended beyond styling and became an important professional relationship built on trust.
